A Beginner's Guide to Home Wi-Fi: Simple Fixes for Slow Internet

Published 2026-10-15

Slow Wi-Fi is frustrating, but the cause is often simple. Before you replace equipment or call your provider, try these steps in order.

1. Restart your router

Turn the router off, wait about thirty seconds and turn it on again. This clears many temporary problems. Do the same with your modem if you have a separate one.

2. Check whether the problem is Wi-Fi or the internet

Connect one device directly to the router with a cable and test it. If it is fast by cable but slow on Wi-Fi, the issue is the wireless signal. If it is slow on both, the problem may be your internet service.

3. Move the router

Wi-Fi signals weaken with distance and obstacles. Try placing the router:

4. Reduce interference

Other wireless devices and neighbours' networks can interfere. Many routers let you change the channel or choose between frequency bands. The faster band usually has shorter range, and the slower band reaches further. Check your router's instructions for how to change settings.

5. Check how many devices are connected

Phones, tablets, TVs, speakers and cameras all share your connection. If many devices are streaming or downloading at once, everything slows down. Disconnect devices you are not using.

6. Update the router

Routers occasionally need updates for performance and security. Check the manufacturer's instructions on how to update, and consider changing the default admin password.

7. Use a cable where you can

For devices that stay in one place, such as a desktop computer or TV, a cable is faster and more stable than Wi-Fi.

8. Consider extending coverage

If some rooms still have a weak signal, you have options such as a Wi-Fi extender, a mesh system or powerline adapters. Each has trade-offs in cost, speed and setup. Compare options and check recent independent reviews.

9. Check your plan

If your household uses more devices or streams video in high quality, your plan may simply be too slow. Check the speed you pay for, compare it with a speed test, and ask your provider about options. Plans and prices change, so check current details.

10. Secure your network

Use a strong Wi-Fi password and the security setting recommended by the router. Unknown devices on your network can slow it down.

When to ask for help

If nothing improves, contact your provider. Tell them what you have already tried, since it helps them diagnose the problem faster.

Quick checklist

Restart, test by cable, move the router, reduce interference, disconnect extra devices, update, then consider new equipment only if needed.
